Over the past 20 years, I have had the privilege to practice the art and science of Chiropractic. The purpose of this article is to give a synopsis of Chiropractic and how it relates to the way that I have practiced over the last 16 years.

The commonly accepted definition of chiropractic is “a system of healing based upon the principle that mechanical distortions of the body – particularly of the spinal column – may either cause or aggravate disease processes by some form of disturbance to the related nervous system components”. The primary form of such offending mechanical distortion is the vertebral subluxation complex (VSC). The VSC is generally considered to be a slight off-centering of one spinal structure relative to another within or slightly beyond their normal range of movements. The off-centering in the VSC may be due to direct trauma, tensed ligaments, contracted muscle, postural stresses, nervous tensions, etc. The VSC is attended by varying degrees of facet joint fixation, strain, or mechanical impropriety, and alteration in the size of the intervertebral foramen (IVF – the hole that the nerves exit the spine and into the body). Narrowing of the IVF can result in pressure, impingement, irritation or traction on the foraminal contents – particularly the spinal nerved – which may result in various clinical syndromes due to associated clinical syndromes and conditions.
As this is the “traditional” explanation of Chiropractic, I would like to emphasize that the art and science of Chiropractic is much more than the “pinched nerve” concept. Although the VSC and “nerve impingement” are at the core of most current concepts of Chiropractic, further research and clinical application has proven that the Chiropractic Adjustment/Manipulation can affect so much more. We understand that the nervous system is in a constant state of “flux” and it can be affected by the Chiropractic Adjustment. Recent research has shown its effects on somato-visceral conditions like blood pressure, vision, hearing, balance, and even athletic performance. Chiropractic neurologists are currently studying the effects of the Chiropractic Adjustment on Autism, ADD, ADHD, and other neurological conditions that respond favorably to specific Chiropractic treatment. Chiropractic orthopedists are seeing the effects of enhanced athletic performance and injury recovery when chiropractic treatment is utilized.
At this clinic, we use a variety of therapeutic modalities, adjusting techniques, and rehabilitative therapies to promote and affect quick and lasting healing. In cases of chronic pain issues, we also utilize supportive treatment concepts including massage therapy and acupuncture treatment in addition to the chiropractic treatment. By utilizing a multitude of application, we can help the greatest number of people in the shortest time period and in the most cost-effective manner. Treatment plans in this office are patient – driven. What this means is that treatment is based on the patient’s particular condition and agreed upon by the doctor and patient. There are no “canned” treatment schedules at this office. We set appointments based on the necessity for EACH treatment. When the patient’s condition is resolved, the treatment is finished. Because of this, some patient may come just 2 or 3 visits, others may come 10 or 12 visits, while others may come on a regular interval (monthly) for chronic conditions. The nature and extent of chiropractic treatment is based on the individual patients needs and conditions. Not only has this work well for this office, this concept is in compliance with all of the current “best practice” guidelines.
I am accepting new chiropractic patients daily. If you, or someone you know, is interested in undergoing personalized chiropractic treatment, please call my office 419.335.5851 and inform the receptionist that you would like chiropractic treatment and she will assist you with setting up an appointment.
